sixtydoses. where od is jobless.

Lol. Nah am not jobless. Just couldn’t think of a better subject. But anyway..

I hate it when I have the feeling of resigning from my job. There’s a job fair this weekend and am going to ‘sell’ myself. Something that am really bad at.

And I mean, really, really, bad.

In the cv form on the job recruiter’s website, there’s a portion where I have to fill in with my skills, if I have any (I have left that portion blank since day 1).

It got me thinking(since forever), how do you define if one is a beginner, or an intermediate, or an advanced user in nix? This is a very subjective question and I kinda hate it.

  1. Compare yourself to others. I think I am beginner to intermediate. Looking at you skillset, I would say that you are at least intermediate. It’s all down to what you say and can prove…

I’m in a similar situation, but havent yet resigned.

  2. You know what, most people advise me to not compare myself with others 😉

Kinda depressing sometimes whenever I start working on my cv. And the thought of fitting myself into a new environment, meeting new people, are very disturbing. Given a chance I’d want to stick to one place for good. But it’s hard to be happy for long when you realize you’re kinda dealing with a ‘stagnant’ achievement.

You’re planning to resign too, eh?

  3. Wish I was there to give you a hug honey. ❤ I think you underestimate your talents so much. There have been so many things I have learned from you (SSH tunnelling was the last and lets not forget NOHUP concept). Remember change is scary but it is also exciting as well. It helps us grow and become better people in the long run so try to look at it from a positive point of view!

I love you sweety! * hugs and kisses *

  4. Not planning to resign. After 12 years with the company I want to be made redundant so they can pay me off!!

The problem with not comparing your skills is that you can’t consider them in a vacuum. If you look at other techs you know, are you better than them or not? If you are the senior tech then you are an advanced person. While I would never say to over exaggerate things, don’t sell yourself short!

What does it mean by redundant?

Comparing skills to another person happens all the time. Sometimes I overdo it that I’ll end up depress lol. I tend to find myself in between most of the time, so I guess am a mediocre.

  7. Redundancy is where the role you do is no longer required. Under UK/EU law, you get paid money based on years of service. It’s not like being fired or resigning.

  8. Well, I am now jobless. My last day was yesterday and I went and had many drinks with friends.

  10. I did. As of last Friday evening, I am now fully jobless. Right now I am motivating myself to complete a batch of application forms for other jobs.

On a happier note, my bank called to ask whether I was expecting to see a strangely large amount of money in my bank account. So the company have given me my blood money and all is well.

    How’s your search going?

  11. Whoa!! That’s good to know. Must be a lot sum of money! Now I regret for not being your neighbour. And you should be thankful that you’re not single else I’d be.. uh.. nevermind. Devin is reading.

Mine’s nada. There was an invitation for interview but for programming position. Wtf. Programming?? I don’t even remember having that word in my cv. But anyway I replied a few days later saying that I’d agreed with the interview but then, they’re all quiet 😦

Ah well. I seriously need to learn how to sew.

  12. Not as much money as I’d have liked after 12 years! Ah well, I have a couple of application forms in for jobs I could do easily and plenty more to write out!

And tell Devin to… look over there!! Keep looking!!

(now, what were you saying?) 😉

  16. Thanks od. How’s your job hunt going?

    Comment by ray — June 4, 2010 @ 6:24 pm

  17. Well I didn’t really go all out in hunting for jobs since am still employed (or prolly I just said this to make me feel better).

I’ve applied for 5 – 6 posts but sadly nada feedback 😦 . Not even a single company reviewed my resume. Lol. What a luck. I feel stupid.
